Northwest Montana Ranch - Complete Description
Located in the Northwest corner of Montana, in Lincoln County,
this ranch is surrounded by over 2.2 million acres that comprise the Kootenai National Forest. The scenery is breathtaking with mountain views, lakes, streams and forest.
This is a hunter's paradise and wildlife photographer's dream! Elk are the primary game species but the area is also home to white tail and
mule deer, moose, black bear, mountain lion, grizzly, coyote, wolf and numerous other smaller animals as well as turkey and
game birds.
Trails transverse
the forest and provide opportunities for biking, hiking, rock and ice climbing, hunting,
cross-country skiing, snow shoeing and miles of horseback riding.
Boating and fishing can be enjoyed on Lake Koocanusa as well as many other lakes in the area. The streams and rivers are home to many species of fish including the native Kookanee
salmon. 90 mile long Lake Koocanusa lies behind 422 foot tall Libby Dam, located 16 miles upstream from the town of Libby.
A joint effort with Canada the name is derived from the first three letters from KOOtenai River, CANada and USA. This lake
also has areas for lake-shore camping and picnicking.
The town of Eureka is located on the Tobacco River in an area known as the Tobacco Valley. Eureka was founded in the early 1880's as settlers
moved north from Missoula and south from Canada. The Canadian fur trapper and explorer David Thompson visited the Tobacco
Valley in the early 1800's during his search for a route to the Pacific Ocean. Eureka holds a "Rendezvous" every year in April to commemorate his visit.
Because
of the location of the valley in relationship to the mountains, this area is known as a "Banana Belt", the climate
is exceptional for outdoor living.
Northwest Montana
Ranch is located in an area known as the West Kootenai and is approximately 35 minuets from the town of Eureka. The small
West Kootenai community is home to an Amish settlement and store, a number of churches and a volunteer fire department. Every
June the Amish Community hosts their annual school auction which includes a wide variety of Amish made furniture and quilts.
Larger
towns in the area include Libby and the Whitefish/Kalispell areas, both approximately 75 miles away.
